Classic work charting the formation of the English working class in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Thompson not only does the business in terms of the economic history but also famously charts the lives, politics and actions of the class itself in resisting the attempts to mould them into a passive, subservient and impoverished work force. 1. Classic work charting the formation of the English working class in the 17th and early 18th centuries

This should really be corrected to say 18th and early 19th centuries which is the period covered by Thompson. People looking for material written from a similar perspective, but focusing on the 17th century might enjoy books by Christopher Hill:

    Liberty against the Law, Hill

The World turned upside down, Hill
