Gail Coles worked as the administrator and organiser for Radical Alternatives to Prison, full time from 1972 to 1973 and part-time alongside Liz Middleton from 1974 to 1977, continuing as part of the policy making group for the organisation into the early 80s. She has been a lecturer on film and television theory at the University of Westminster since 1992 with a particular interest in documentary film. In response to the recent debates around the rising prison population, Gail and Liz wrote to The Guardian newspaper in July, 2024, calling attention to the work of RAP over half a century ago and pointing out the need for not just the short-term solutions of the present government, but long-term, visionary solutions incorporating radical changes to the penal and criminal justice systems.
